Олимпиада по английскому языку 2011 г.
В МЦО прошла традиционная олимпиада. Были предложены творческие задания: слушатели должны были написать рассказ-описание, рассказ-повествование или эссе. Самые интересные и грамотные работы были выполнены на уровне Pre-Intermediate. Работы были правильно организованы логически, слушатели продемонстрировали хороший диапазон лексических и грамматических структур в соответствии со своим уровнем, что было неудивительно, так как большинство групп на этом уровне занимаются по 200-часовой программе, дающей возможность сформировать более прочные навыки. Хорошо справились с заданием на уровнях Elementary и Intermediate. К сожалению, эссе слушателей уровня Upper Intermediate не отличались последовательным и логическим изложением мыслей, что касается стилистики, грамматики и лексики, эти языковые аспекты также оставляют желать лучшего.
Elementary
A magazine is holding a competition for the best story with a title: “ The most amazing day in my life”.
Many days in my life were interesting and great. The most amazing day happened eight years ago.
It was in winter, 8th January. The weather was sunny and cold. I went to a village. I visited my grandparents. About a midday my wife phoned me. She said our daughter was born. I felt excited. It was great. I took my car and drove to Moscow very fast. I wanted to see my wife and my daughter. When I came home, my parents were there. They told me, “Congratulations!” After that we went to my wife. When I saw my wife and my daughter I was very happy.
Our Daughter is eight now. She goes to school. Her name is Alina. She is wonderful.
I will never forget the most amazing day in my life.

A magazine is holding a competition for the best story with a title: “ The most interesting person I know”.
The most interesting person I know is my close friend. Her name is Ann. She is quite good-looking and very slim with curly white hair. She is always friendly and love to have fun. But she is interesting for me with her work.
First of all, she works in Moscow Rescue Service. Ann is a lifeguard. Her work is very dangerous and difficult. She helps people to save their lives when they are in deadly situations, such as, for example, fire or car disaster. She is very brave and I am proud of her.
Secondly, Ann loves sport. She is very keen on water sports. She enjoys swimming and scuba diving.In my opinion she leads a healthy lifestyle. It’s wonderful because many people nowadays don’t think about their health.
Finally, I have never seen a person who loves animals so much. She has a cat, a dog and the rare animal – snake! These pets are very friendly to each other and to those people who visit her flat. In my opinion to look after the pets is very difficult.
All in all, I am glad to have Ann because she is a wonderful and interesting person I have never meet this sort of people.

You want to enter a competition for a story to be included in the next edition of your school magazine The story should include the following sentence:
“A day which had begun with tears ended in smiles”
It was 28th of November. It was cold and windy weather outside. I woke up and realized that nothing good was going to happen with me that day because that day was day of my performance on a school stage. I had been practicing for a very long time but I stll thought I hadn’t done enough. So I almost cried when I was on way to school.
When it was 2 p.m., I went to the café to meet my good friends. They are wonderful people. They always support me. And that day wasn’t an exception. They knew that I felt a bit nervous and helped me to feel more confident.
Despite that I was still very afraid. Of course, I understood that my failure wouldn’t be a big problem for my school but it would for me. I began to think how to get out of this school, town, country. What if I went to Egypt and started work as an animator in a lovely hotel?
But I am not such kind of person who can give up all their work. No, not me! So I decide to go to the end.
It was 5 p.m. I was standing behind the scene watching the performance of other students. What a fantastic performance it was! It was wonderful concert! I began thinking that I would definitely ruin it! It was 20 minutes past 5 and I was next.
When I went on the stage all views began applauding. It helped a little Then I started singing. You know I had been practicing for 5 months and that song was my favourite. It was “My heart will go on” But despite the fact that my voice trembled the performance was perfect. At the end of the song all the audience stood up applauding. It was a great feeling standing there in the light and getting flowers and kisses. I forgot about everything except that.
In the evening my friends and I went to celebrate my success. I’ll never forget this day, a day which began in tears and ended in smiles.

Comment on the quotation “Desire is individual. Happiness is common.” –Julian Casablancas
To begin with it is worth mentioning that the question about happiness is a tricky one and even the most careful attempts to crack it lead us on the slippy road. But being a highly inquisitive creature, man is trying to find an answer again and again.
Although the issue of well-being causes heated debates there are still several non-descript ideas of what happiness may consist of which goes without saying down to family, friends, enough amount of money, health, peace and so on. On the one hand, it seems obvious that no one would argue about it. On the other hand, there are people who are always against and ready to undermine and deny all these common values. More specifically the things of paramount importance to them are pursuing career, becoming wealthy and well-established even household names, gaining power and other stuff of that kind.
On top of that these people fulfill their wishes quite successfully, reaching their goals, being persistent and determined to the extent that makes us feel envy their way of life and outstanding achievements. But the main point is –whether they have become happy after their efforts or not.
What I am trying to say is that living our lives we give a second thought to dozens of things we have done. These way most of those who have been sharing all these ideas about happiness and joy feel that they have managed to live up to their expectations, whereas those people realize that something is still missing from their lives as they are still haunted by the sense of self-worth. It seems like they have been preoccupied with themselves all the time.
To sum up, I want to emphasize that to reach happiness one should think twice whether this or that desire will lead to it, what the consequences could be, we should always keep it in perspective. There are, no doubt, things of unconventional desire for all human beings and beware if you stand too much apart from them as wise people always say that all happy people are happy in the same way.

Олимпиада по английскому языку 2010 г.
11 апреля в МЦО прошла традиционная весенняя Олимпиада среди слушателей наших курсов, в которой приняли участие 60 человек. Традиционными были и задания: написать рассказ, статью или прокомментировать цитату.
Мы рады сообщить, что наш давний партнер, компания «Macmillan», как всегда предоставила призы для наших победителей.
В целом комиссия отметила, что участники показали хорошие знания лексики и структур, соответствующих их уровню. Однако серьезным недостатком большинства работ явилось отклонение от темы или односторонний подход в ее раскрытии. Так как содержательный аспект является основным критерием оценки, многие хорошие работы не вошли в число призовых.
Мы надеемся, что эти рекомендации помогут будущим участникам наших Олимпиад.

15 апреля 2007 на курсах МЦО прошла ставшая уже традиционной Олимпиада по английскому языку. В ней приняли участие 51 человек. Ежегодно Российское представительство издательства "Macmillan" предоставляет подарки победителям олимпиады.

9 апреля 2006 года в Международном центре обучения прошла ежегодная Олимпиада по английскому языку в которой приняли участие 70 человека. Участники Олимпиады писали творческие работы.
